About Epilepsy Surgery
Dr Shah, during his fellowship training also learnt about diagnosing and treating epilepsy patients and mastering the epilepsy surgeries like:
–Temporal lobe epilepsy surgery- including Amygdalohippocampectomy, anterior temporal lobectomy, etc-
Responsive Nerve Stimulation (RNS) – for generalised epilepsy, electrodes are implanted in the specific area of brain and connected to specialized device which detects the brain signals for seizures and delivers current to stop or minimise the seizures.
Laser Intersitial Thermal Therapy– Latest innovation where in seizure producing area is burnt with laser without having to excise that area.
Stereotactic Electroencephalography (SEEG)– When the origin of seizure area is not identified by non-invasive method, SEEG can be used to localise it for further treatment.
Functional Hemispherotomy and disconnection – When entire large area of brain is the origin of seizures, then the entire area is disconnected from rest of the brain to prevent the spread of seizures.
Lesionectomy- when tumour or abnormally developed brain area is responsible for seizures, that area is excised if it is safe to give seizure free life.
